Newport‑Mesa School District Sees Special Election for Newport Beach Board Seat

A special election was held on June 10 to fill the Newport‑Beach trustee seat on the Newport‑Mesa Unified School District board after a petition overturned the provisional January appointment. Business owner Andrea McElroy led occupational therapist and former appointee Kirstin Walsh in early vote counts and ultimately won with approximately 54% of the vote.

The seat became vacant when former board member Michelle Barto was elected to Newport Beach’s city council. Walsh had served in the role for five weeks before the election was triggered by enough petition signatures. The winner will serve out the remainder of the term ending in December 2026.
