Plans Underway for New Snug Harbor Surf Park at Former Newport Golf Course

Newport Beach officials are reviewing a proposal to transform a central portion of the Newport Beach Golf Course into a surf park and recreation complex. The plan features a 5-acre surf lagoon with four wave zones, surrounded by viewing platforms, lounge areas, warming pools, and a spa. The development would also include a three-story clubhouse offering a surf academy, fitness and yoga studios, locker rooms, retail shops, and dining options.

In addition, the project proposes a two-story building with 20 guest rooms overlooking the lagoon, underground board and golf cart storage, landscape enhancements, and two parking lots with a combined 350 spaces and solar canopies. The remaining holes of the golf course, located north and south of the project area, would remain intact.

To move forward, the project requires a General Plan Amendment to increase the permitted building square footage, as well as several city permits. Due to its proximity to John Wayne Airport, federal and county-level aviation reviews are also necessary.

The Newport Beach Planning Commission held an initial study session on the proposal in June, with public hearings anticipated later this year.
