Hurricane Marie Remnants Bring Dangerous Surf and Rip Currents to Newport Beach

The remnants of Hurricane Marie are continuing to impact the Southern California coastline, bringing powerful waves and dangerous rip currents to beaches throughout the region, including Newport Beach.

Although Marie remained hundreds of miles offshore and did not make landfall in California, the storm generated large swells that reached the coast over Labor Day weekend. Some south-facing beaches saw waves approaching 10 feet, while strong currents created potentially life-threatening conditions for swimmers and surfers.  

The conditions kept local lifeguards especially busy. Newport Beach lifeguards conducted 177 rescues on Saturday alone as strong currents moved both along the shoreline and out to sea. Lifeguard Battalion Chief Adam Yacenda described conditions across the city’s beaches as red-flag conditions and warned that only experienced people should consider entering the water.  

Elsewhere along the Southern California coast, the storm’s effects included coastal flooding and powerful surf. Water pushed into parking areas near the Seal Beach Pier, while beaches in Los Angeles and Ventura counties also experienced dangerous rip currents and elevated waves.  

Even as Marie weakens, the danger at the beach can continue because swells generated by the storm can persist after the system itself loses strength. High surf, strong rip currents and elevated tides remained concerns along portions of the coast through Tuesday.  

Officials are urging beachgoers throughout Orange County to pay attention to lifeguard warnings, swim near staffed lifeguard towers and avoid entering the ocean when conditions exceed their experience level. The recent rescues demonstrate how quickly powerful surf and rip currents can create dangerous situations even when the storm responsible for them remains far offshore.
