Major Dredging Project Set to Begin in Newport Harbor

The City of Orange County and federal partners are launching the final phase of a long-running restoration effort in Newport Harbor, targeting the removal of approximately 900,000 cubic yards of sediment over the next 10 to 12 months. The roughly $22 million project is scheduled to begin in December and finish by fall 2026.

Officials say the work will restore the harbor’s federally authorized depths, improve circulation, and reduce the need for future maintenance dredging. Environmental safeguards are in place: 80 percent of the sediment will be transported to an approved offshore disposal site, while the more contaminated portion will be barged to the Port of Long Beach for encapsulation and reuse.

For the community, the project marks a major milestone—13 years in the making—and signals better boating access, improved water quality, and a clearer horizon for Newport Harbor’s future.
