“Surf’s Up!” – Newport Beach City Council Advances Snug Harbor Surf Park Plan

Newport Beach officials have voted to move forward with the ambitious Snug Harbor Surf Park proposal, a project that would transform a central portion of the Newport Beach Golf Course into a large-scale surf resort. The plan calls for four surf lagoons, a three-story clubhouse featuring a surf academy, restaurant, retail spaces, a spa, and 20 on-site lodging units designed for visiting surfers and spectators.

While the northern and southern sections of the golf course would remain untouched, the central area would undergo a complete reimagining, requiring a General Plan amendment, a conditional use permit, and certification of an environmental impact report. The decision has sparked strong reactions across the community—supporters see it as an exciting new recreational destination with global appeal, while opponents worry about the loss of open space and reduced access to one of the region’s most affordable golf courses. More than 1,800 public comments were submitted, reflecting how deeply the proposal has captured local attention.
