Top Young Sailors Gather in Newport Beach for the 2025 Governor’s Cup
The 58th annual Governor’s Cup has returned to Newport Beach, bringing together the world’s best youth match racers for a week of elite sailing at the Balboa Yacht Club. Taking place from July 29 to August 3, this prestigious regatta features sailors under age 23 from countries including the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain, and Sweden.
Competitors race in identical Cup 22 sloops, leveling the playing field and spotlighting strategy and skill. After two intense round-robin stages, top sailors advance to the semifinals and finals. American skipper Justin Callahan made headlines by going undefeated in his first 17 matches, securing an early semifinal spot. Other frontrunners include defending champion Cole Tapper of Australia and New Zealand’s Josh Hyde.
Often referred to as the “America’s Cup” of youth sailing, the Governor’s Cup has a rich legacy of producing Olympians and world-class racers. Set against the backdrop of Newport Harbor, this year’s competition not only showcases the sport’s rising talent but also highlights the city’s deep ties to international sailing excellence.
