Bicyclist Critically Injured in Morning Crash on Coast Highway in Newport Beach

A bicyclist is fighting for life after a collision with a vehicle on East Coast Highway near Fernleaf Avenue in Newport Beach. The crash happened shortly after 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, and the driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with police, who shut down lanes of the busy coastal route while the investigation proceeded.

Emergency personnel transported the rider to a nearby hospital in critical condition, and a SigAlert was issued minutes later as investigators processed the crash scene. With the increasing frequency of serious injuries on this stretch of highway, the incident has reignited concerns about bicycle-safety infrastructure, visibility of riders, and the protections afforded to vulnerable road users in high-traffic zones.
