Newport Beach Fire Department Offers Free Wildfire Readiness Inspections for Local Homes

The Newport Beach Fire Department is offering free wildfire preparedness inspections to help residents reduce fire risk and comply with upcoming state requirements. These home assessments focus on creating defensible space—especially a five-foot “ember-resistant” buffer around the house known as Zone Zero—and identifying ways to protect structures from airborne embers and vegetation hazards.

The effort is in response to California Assembly Bill 3074, which mandates ember-resistant zones for homes in high-risk areas by 2026. Newport Beach’s program helps homeowners get ahead of the curve with practical, site-specific guidance.

In addition to inspections, the city will host a wildfire prevention expo in October, providing resources, expert advice, and home-hardening tips to prepare for the increasingly severe wildfire seasons affecting coastal communities.
