Newport Beach Police Chief Provides Safety Update at Corona del Mar Community Meeting

At a recent Corona del Mar Residents Association gathering, Newport Beach’s Police Chief Dave Miner and Fire Battalion Chief Nick Stocks shared critical updates on public safety. Chief Stocks reflected on the department’s summer deployments, including battling the massive Gifford Fire in San Luis Obispo. He also previewed an upcoming fuel modeling presentation—using AI to predict fire behavior under various conditions—for the City Council.

Chief Miner, officially appointed earlier this year after serving in several leadership roles within NBPD, walked attendees through departmental highlights. He noted the department’s proactive staffing efforts ahead of Labor Day, boosted by incentives that are attracting seasoned lateral officers. The expansion of the Mounted Enforcement Unit is also underway to aid crowd control over the holidays, especially along the busy peninsula.

Other key updates included the rollout of “drones as first responders” across five strategic hubs to assist with emergencies and search operations; increased anti-burglary patrols in residential neighborhoods; stepped-up efforts to manage e-bike usage with education and potential new rules; and ongoing outreach around homelessness—highlighting four dedicated liaison officers and partnerships with shelters.
