Newport Beach Son Convicted of Killing Parents and Housekeeper in 2019

A tragic chapter in Newport Beach’s history reached a verdict as a jury convicted 34-year-old Camden Burton Nicholson of murdering his parents, Richard and Kim Nicholson, along with their longtime housekeeper, Maria Morse, inside the family’s home in 2019. Prosecutors described the killings as deliberate and brutal, carried out shortly after Nicholson was released from psychiatric care.

Investigators said Nicholson attacked his father in the garage before turning on his mother and Morse inside the home, leaving behind a devastating scene. Evidence presented in court suggested the attacks were planned, with the suspect attempting to clean the area and flee in his father’s vehicle afterward.

During the trial, prosecutors argued that Nicholson’s motives were rooted in anger and control, while the defense claimed he suffered from severe mental illness and paranoia. With the jury’s decision now rendered, the case moves to a sanity phase to determine whether Nicholson was legally insane at the time of the murders.

For the Newport Beach community, the case has reopened painful memories and renewed discussions about mental health, family intervention, and the fine line between treatment and accountability.
