Newport Harbor High Senior Launches Empower Education to Support Students in Uganda and Mexico
Newport Harbor High School senior Henry Nielson Koch has launched Empower Education, a student-led initiative focused on improving educational opportunities for underserved children in Uganda and Oaxaca, Mexico. With the help of high school volunteers, the organization builds classrooms, develops curriculum, provides school supplies, and supports athletic programs in partnership with local and international nonprofits.
Empower Education is active across multiple projects, including upgrades at Green Hill Primary School in Uganda where increased resources have already boosted student performance. The group also collaborates with the African Promise Foundation and OFEA in Oaxaca. Led by more than 50 members, the organization recruits new volunteers, maintains weekly planning meetings, and emphasizes leadership development through committee roles.
Recent efforts include a food drive in San Clemente to support students abroad, fundraising for educational materials, and shipping an electric piano for music classes. Henry and his team plan to expand further by constructing additional classrooms, building a high school in Uganda, and extending their reach to orphanages in Mexico and Korea. Through these efforts, Empower Education aims to create long-term community impact and foster global citizenship among students.
